WHAT EXACTLY IS THE SHOW?

The goal of the show is to inform the students of the wide range of genres of books, and to get them excited about the whole idea of recreational reading.

In the past, I’ve gotten lots of phone calls from reading specialists and principals who liked the general idea of the show, but wanted more specifics. In a nutshell, the program is a magic show, where every other magic trick performed incorporates a discussion of a different type of book, or an aspect of reading, such as the importance of the library as a source of information.

For instance, many students feel that "book" specifically means fiction- i.e. "storybook" or "chapter book". I explain that books are also a wonderful way to learn how to do something new- like building a birdhouse, performing magic, or even flying an airplane. I then talk about learning how to cook from books- cookbooks- and invite a first grade student on stage to participate in a routine where we bake an imaginary cake. The routine concludes with some unexpected and very funny results. I also put a student in the center of a great adventure where they become a great explorer who has to use knowledge from books to escape peril.
